While you wait, there’s something I’d rather you hear than read
I sat down recently for a long interview about how I actually ended up here. It wasn’t scripted and I didn’t prepare answers.
I’ll be upfront about what’s in it. I came from engineering. I almost failed my English. I’m an introvert, and for years I found it a real challenge to talk to strangers. My first roadshow, I just acted like I was confident because I had no better idea.
Nobody wakes up one morning and says they want to be an insurance agent.
I certainly didn’t.
So if you’re at a similar crossroads in your career right now, I think you’ll relate to what I’m sharing inside this interview, as someone who’s in your situation twenty years earlier and found my way into a sales-related industry:
What’s in the conversation
- 02:54 — “Nobody wakes up and says they want to be an insurance agent.” How this career actually finds people.
- 14:10 — The honest bit: “I am a natural introvert. Someone who finds it a challenge talking to strangers.” Why that wasn’t the disqualifier everyone assumed.
- 16:03 — My first roadshow. Acting confident, closing anyway, and what that taught me about the order confidence actually arrives in.
- 25:04 — My own weakness as a leader, and what I built to work around it.
- 29:56 — The honest answer about who I can help and who I can’t.
- 35:09 — The “3+1” system. Why a new consultant is never sent to an appointment alone in their first three to four months.
- 41:41 — Businessman or freelancer. The one distinction that predicts whether you last in this industry.
- 47:31 — The consultant who took ten years to achieve MDRT, and the single conversation that turned it around.
Why this matters for your decision
Most people evaluating this industry are trying to answer one question: can I do this without becoming someone I’m not?
My team is built around that answer.
Year-on-year team growth of at least 10%, with revenue doubling over five years, driven by existing consultants improving, not by recruiting more bodies.
80% of the team performed better this year than last at the most recent mid-year review.
Coaching is on effort and gaps, not on pressure. I believe in effort, and results eventually follow, because effort is something you can control.
If you want to go one step further

You get a proper read on your strengths and how they’d translate into advisory work. No sales call attached, no obligation after.
I’ll also tell you if I don’t think it’s right for you. I’ve counselled people out of this career before when I could see they’d be better off elsewhere, and I’d rather say that now than later.
Open to Singaporeans and PRs aged 21 and above, with at least an A-level or diploma qualification.
